You don't really need to submit your website to search engines because your site would be crawled by their site crawlers but its a good habit to do so because submitting your website to search engines would make it easier and faster to be located and indexed.

You don't have to submit your website to all search engines. Google, Yahoo and MSN accounts for more than 80 percent of searches in the internet. Submitting your website to these three giants would be enough, of course, if you want to submit your website to all thousands and thousands of search engines, then go ahead. But I say it's not worth the effort.

Once your site is indexed in search engines, you still need to optimise it to get a good ranking. Remember, people would normally look only at the top twenty searches, if you are not in there chances are you wouldn't be receiving any visitors. Here are tips on how to optimize your website.

Content is Everything - I have been emphasising on this over and over again. Don't think that search engines are just stupid programs that would just scan your website and look for key words. Search engines are becoming wiser and wiser everyday, even if you can fool search engines today, you won't stay long on top. Also, submitted websites are sometime reviewed by real people. If you're site is full of good content, you would end up high on search engine rankings.

Creating Title, Descriptions and Keywords - Whenever creating the title, description and keywords of the page in the html tags, be sure that all your keywords are present in them. Also it is important that those keywords appear a lot on your content specially at the first few sentences. Title and Description are the most important html tags. Meta Keywords are not really a factor but it wont hurt to add them.

Simplicity is Beauty - Graphics and multimedia may make your site look cool but not for search engines. Search engines can't read graphics and multimedia. Too much graphics on your site may cause it to lose ranks even if you have lots of good content because it would push your content down to the page. Consider looking at the source code of your page full of graphics and see where the contents are because search engines sees the page in that format. Also visitors wouldn't be attracted to sites full of graphics because it loads slower and it clutters the page. If you can't help not to use graphics, one or two shouldn't be so bad.

Remember, different search engines have different algorithms on how they rank websites, but the above mentioned tips should work best for all. Don't try to be number one on all search engines, it's next to impossible. There are still lots of ways to attract traffic
